Finding water leakage on your property? It might be time for a backflow repair!

When it comes to ensuring that the public water supply is safe from contaminants like food waste, chemicals, pesticides, or other types of waste, the responsibility lies with property owners- both residential and commercial - to maintain their plumbing systems. One of the ways that this is accomplished is by installing a backflow device to keep the water flowing in only one direction. However, there are times when your backflow device might not be working as well as it should. In which case, it’s time to schedule a backflow test and repair.
Testable Backflow devices are more commonly found in commercial properties or large residential properties that have irrigation systems, boilers, and fire sprinkler systems. Most people don’t know about the important role they play in keeping the drinking water safe.
Unfortunately, a broken backflow device can create health hazards and property damage. To mitigate these hazards, BC Water & Waste Association is an advisory committee and governing body dedicated to maintaining a cross connection control program in BC. But how do you know when you need a backflow repair?
What’s a backflow device?
Before diving into the signs it’s time for a backflow repair, I wanted to touch on what a backflow preventer is. As mentioned above, a backflow device keeps the water flow in a water system moving in one direction.
Several types of backflow prevention devices can be installed on water systems. Each type of backflow device is designed to address a specific hazard level (low, medium or high) and can either be tested to ensure functionality, or non-testable.
You can find a list of assemblies on the Capital Regional District website.
In BC, backflow devices need to be tested annually. If you suspect that your backflow device isn’t working properly, you need a certified backflow technician to assess and address the issue.
How do you know it's time for a backflow repair?
Like any other mechanical component, backflow devices are prone to wear and tear. When this happens, there are going to be very clear signs that it’s time to get your backflow repaired.
Leakage
Backflow devices help regulate the direction of the flow of water in a water system, preventing contaminated water from backflowing or back siphoning into the clean water system. Because the device is so integral to the water system network,. It is not uncommon for a backflow device to leak when it’s worn out.
Oftentimes the problem can be as simple as a cracked or worn rubber seal that needs replacing, but sometimes the problems can be more significant like cracks in the valve.
In either case, if you notice water leaking from the backflow device in your building, it’s time to call a certified backflow technician.
Discoloured water
When your backflow device is working properly, your drinking water should be clean and clear. If you notice any discolouration to your water - muddy, yellowish hues - don’t drink it and get some help. Your device may be siphoning back contaminated water into your main pipes.
