Backflow Valve or Backwater Valve: Are they the same?

Backflow valve or backwater valve?

At SMT Backflow, backflow prevention is what we do. From testing, repairs and general maintenance, it’s our business to ensure that the backflow assemblies in your building are working properly. One thing we get asked often is: Do we test the backwater valve? The simple answer is no. We do not test backwater valves.

But we need to ensure that our clients understand the key differences between backwater and backflow valves. Many people confuse the two.

Yes, backwater valve and a backflow valve have similar functions, but, they serve two different functions within a plumbing system. So we thought to clarify the key differences.

What’s a backflow valve?

A backflow valve, also called a backflow preventer, is a device that allows water to flow in a single direction. Backflow prevention systems are not typically installed on single-family homes, unless there is a complex watering system in the residence. Instead, they are installed on irrigation systems, sprinkler systems, and other commercial water supplies to prevent contaminated water from flowing back into the public water supply.

What is a backwater valve?

Similar to a backflow valve, a backwater valve is a backflow prevention device that prevents contaminated water from reentering the public drinking supply. The main difference, however, is that a backwater valve is installed on sewage lines to prevent sewage from flowing backwards through a water system.

Backwater valves are installed on most homes. They are a one-way valve with a flap, that allows the sewage to exit a residence, then closes to prevent the sewage from flowing back into the home.

Does SMT Backflow test backwater valves?

No, we don’t. At SMT Backflow, we specialize exclusively in backflow prevention systems. That means we don’t service backwater valves or sewage-related devices.

Instead, we focus on the clean water side of your plumbing system. We install, repair and maintain backflow assembly devices for:

  • Domestic water supply lines

  • Irrigation systems

  • Dental and medical facilities

  • Commercial kitchens and cafes

  • Fire protection and sprinkler systems

  • Boilers and heating systems

If your property has one of these systems, or if youre unsure, we can evaluate your set up and provide guidance on compliance and maintenance of your water system.

Why work with a certified backflow tester?

Municipalities in BC require your backflow systems to be tested by a certified backflow tester. This is because they can provide specialized knowledge, and can look at your system on a holistic level.

At SMT Backflow, we’re also trained in pipe fitting, fire protection systems, and general plumbing to ensure that your entire assembly is operating safely and efficiently.

Certified backflow testers are also the only technicians who can complete and submit the municipal reporting requirements for your backflow services.
